It was well before dawn on Sunday when the cyclists first began to congregate — a handful at first, then a few dozen, then hundreds. Not far away, the white lights of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge — the iconic starting point of the New York City Marathon — shimmered like a constellation in the dark sky. But these athletes were happy bathing in the fluorescent glow of a humble 24-hour Dunkin’ Donuts in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. In the past two decades, for a growing number of cyclists, the store’s parking lot has become an iconic starting point in its own right for one irresistible annual challenge: to ride the marathon course in the sliver of time after the roads are closed to traffic and before any official races begin.

A Dunkin' customer says hot coffee fell on her lap at a drive-thru, causing "severe" burns. The lawsuit says a Dunkin' worker hadn't put the lid on properly. When an employee handed the cup of coffee to the woman, its lid wasn't secured and came off shortly after, spilling the hot coffee on her legs and body, her lawyers said. Morgan & Morgan attorney Benjamin Welch said in a statement that the woman "had to re-learn how to walk due to the severity of her burns." Dunkin' – formerly known as Dunkin' Donuts – wasn't named as a defendant in the lawsuit, CNN reported.

New York CNN —A Dunkin’ franchisee is paying a woman $3 million to settle a lawsuit involving hot coffee falling on her lap that she alleges caused severe burns and life-altering injuries, according to her lawyers. “America may run on Dunkin’, but our client had to re-learn how to walk due to the severity of her burns,” said Morgan & Morgan attorney Benjamin Welch in a statement. Other lawsuitsThis case echoes the famous McDonald’s hot coffee lawsuit several decades ago, in which another woman spilled coffee on her lap and suffered third-degree burns. The coffee was “30 to 40 degrees hotter than coffee served by other companies,” the law museum said. Morgan & Morgan founder John Morgan said in a statement that “restaurants still have failed to learn their lesson to prioritize customers’ safety.

Fast-food drive-thru lanes are speeding up as fewer customers choose to order their meals and milkshakes sitting in their car, according to an annual study by Intouch Insight released Monday. The average total time spent in a drive-thru lane shrank by 29 seconds this year. In other words, Carl's Jr and Yum Brands' Taco Bell and KFC were only speedier because their drive-thru lanes weren't as popular. But across the board, drive-thru lanes have waned in demand since the pandemic began. Despite those efforts, this year's total drive-thru times still lag 2019 times by 15 seconds.

New York CNN —This Friday is arguably the best day of the year: It’s National Coffee Day. Sixty-seven percent of Americans drink coffee every day — more than any other beverage, including water — according to National Coffee Association (NCA). A recently released NCA report also said that coffee consumption continues to “bounce back” from the Covid-19 pandemic, notably with at-work consumption growing as companies compel their workers return to the office. In fact, enjoying an in-office coffee has “rebounded to pre-pandemic levels” with 36% of Americans participating. People drinking coffee at home are still above their pre-pandemic levels at 82%.

New York CNN —Delta CEO Ed Bastian said the company probably went “too far” in its controversial changes to the SkyMiles loyalty program and said there are plans for modifications. It got to the point, he said, that the company couldn’t effectively serve those elite status holders, including upgrade certificates and agents on special phone lines. When the moderator asked Bastian about the rewards program changes, the audience at the Atlanta Rotary Club booed. In September, the company implemented changes that would make it more difficult for American Express cardholders to access Delta Sky Clubs and earn Medallion elite status, taking effect in 2025. For frequent fliers, the airline will also change how it awards Medallion elite status starting in 2024.
